God - the guv'nor for the misguided or the guide for the misgoverned

Let's forget the Bible for now and consider God himself. Of course I don't know where you stand on this big issue, so let us start at first principles and look at the basics for belief in a Creator. Now I'm not going to be exhaustive here as this is a big issue and I don't intend to consider questions in the line of "if there's a God, why .... ?".

What I want you to consider is the evidence of your own eyes, ears and reasoning ability or nous. We're not talking about emotion, or gut-feelings here as these fall into the realm of faith, which of course is intensely personal and subjective.

(iii) A History Lesson

Haven't you ever wondered why, for every Hitler there was a Churchill, for every Napoleon a Wellington? There have always been evil men, men driven by pride and a thirst for power. And, it seems, evil does sometimes triumph - for a while. Yet it never lasts. It is arguable that, if it weren't for Churchill, along with a few lapses of judgement on Hitlers part, the 'Thousand Year Reich' could have been an actuality.

There are many, many other examples from history. It seems that there is always something 'holding back' unrelenting evil. As bad as it is for those who have to suffer, whether in the Holocaust, or at the hands of a Pol Pot or an Idi Amin, the times of trial always come to an end eventually.

But rather than looking at the nature of evil, let us look at the other manifestation of supernatural forces, and concentrate on the positive side. For me, the biggest evidences for an unseen power from recent history are those incredible stories of Israel's recent survival mentioned in the previous section.

A miracle is defined as a marvellous event that could not have been brought about by a human agency, but rather by supernatural means i.e. God (modern dictionaries consider it more politically correct not to mention the word, God, presumably so as not to offend the atheists).

Only God could have so thwarted the odds, there is more chance of the Vatican City (or England, the way they've been playing!) winning the Football World Cup than there is a natural, statistical explanation for the continuous survival of the Jews as a people, or Israel as a nation!

World conquerors never seem able to conquer everything they set out to conquer. Evil is always eventually held in check. You'll find out more about the existence of this evil later on in this section.

But who do you think has been holding it in check? I have my answer and also trust than even in the most dire situations, 'all things work together for good'. This is my third evidence for the existence of God.
