Musings of a seasoned traveller on The Way

IN PASSING ……

They say there is a book in each of us - and this is the title of the book which is meandering about in my own mind at this time, which is as far as I have got with a myriad of thoughts and reminiscences rushing to be set down in writing. Whether it will get from mind to paper is another matter. I haven’t a clue as to how to go about it in form etc, but no doubt the internet will provide guidance in that regard.

Some time ago, my son urged me to set down in writing what I would like for my funeral when the time comes, a request brought about through his own experience and the very sudden demise of a friend. Not quite so silly (or morbid) as it might sound ! In actual fact, as a firm Believer that we are merely passing through in this life, I have thoroughly enjoyed putting thoughts together, with family and friends, who I hope will outlive me, to take part in the proceedings in the hope that it will be enjoyed by all, if any - with perhaps one or two even encouraged to walk in The Way in the assurance of better things to come. The most outstanding thought, in looking back, is how incredibly short this life is. When we are young it seems to stretch ahead and we have all the time in the world to make it a better place - then as we become old we realise that time has been but a flick of an eyelid, (as indeed the Bible tells us) and such contribution as any of us can make is miniscule in relation to the real problem - for the only way we can really improve things, throughout all the days of our time here until the very end, is within our own heart and attitude as we grow out of being self-centred like children , to growing up (better late than never) to live a more Christ-centred life. The world is an amazingly beautiful place, an enormously rich tapestry in every way, but the ugly bit is us, mankind.

Ever since the end of WW2 it seems to me that money has become the overriding god - and without a doubt great Babylon rules. (at the moment!) As an avid TV viewer of ‘Dr Who’ - marvellous escapism, I loved it every time the Tardis docked down in dear old GB, among the good old solid Brits who, (yes I am unashamedly prejudiced) I think when at their best are the best in the world and ‘gramps’ gazed up at the sky to imagine granddaughter Donna flying about the universe with the doctor. This uneducated, simple but open-minded and open-hearted character, fully able to quietly accept the wonders beyond, yet totally helpless to change the course of history and with all present problems solved by putting the kettle on and simply getting on with his life. while holding his understanding unspoken and close to his heart. So my requests for my funeral having been faithfully written down, all i’s dotted and t’s crossed to the best of my ability, I look forward enormously to the new series of Dr Who - so cleverly written and performed as the series has been to date - to escape again from politics and pointless discussions from every angle of personal bias, be it religion or whatever, and say from my heart ’Thank you, Father God, for my life, for all its ups and downs, all its hurt and disappointments, for all my own mistakes which have been forgiven, for other people, even when they don’t agree with me - and above all, for your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ’ who makes all things bearable.

Blessings to all,

from Mustard seed.
