Back to The Way - Day 139
God has placed an idea into my brain that won’t go away. As a writer, the only way I can ease the pressure is to write about it. Well I have …. And it still hasn’t gone away, so I have to keep on writing.
So far I've come to three major observations:
1. Going back to our Hebraic Roots is NOT just taking on jewish and OT practices, doing Shabbat and the festivals, being nice to your Jewish neighbour etc. It's a taking on of a different mindset, the Hebraic Mindset
2. All Churches and fellowships, at every point in history apart from the very first Church of the apostles, have had a mindset of Hebraic and Greek - the more Greek it is, the further away from God's ideal it is.
3. Our ultimate aim for going "Back to The Way" is to strive for a completely Hebraic mindset. Personally I think this is unattainable - we have Greek thinking so embedded in our minds, our actions, our motivations.
HEBRAIC = faith and conduct
GREEK = reason and doctrine

Mindset
Good observation Steve. In the early days there was no TV, movies and theater to brainwash people. The most common social event was something to do with the Kingdom like the feasts or the Sabbaths, so people mostly thought about that. They also used those principles to define their world because they had no Darwinian philosophies or religious equal rights. The culture that God gave His people amounted to an entire culture with all the holy days and special events in place with parts for everyone. People did not wander aimless not knowing what to do with themselves. Jews were raised with the commandments and knew the answers even from a very young age that grown men struggle with today. When mankind put away the things of God they put away the handbook of living on this planet. I think you are right that we should strive to get back to those principles that the Creator gave us.

Jewish mindset
Hi, Interested in your comments, a Jewish mindset is possible. For over 20yrs I have been a part of Messianic Jewish congregations, unfortunatly many are just Hebrew Christian, only by finding a truely Messianic congregation can you begin to feel assimilated into this mindset. I found such a congregation here in Leicester 10yrs ago, together we have made the transition from Greek to Hebrew, Church to Synagogue.

Back to the Way
I believe Greek philosophy that involves reason and doctrine is complimentary to the Hebraic roots of faith and conduct. Greek is big on research and education, and without it, those who are like doubting Thomas would not have the evidence needed to strengthen their faith. Doesn't God tell us to prove all things? Now we can.
There is even a book out now called 'How God Changes the Brain' written by two neurologists, who, while not Christians, have discovered that prayer actually can rewire the brain in moving us from anger to kindness and love. This is huge when we consider that anger is the most destructive force on our planet. Doesn't Jesus tell us in Romans 12:2 KJV, 'Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.' Now science has the evidence that we cannot change ourselves unless we can change the way we think, and this comes from understanding the reasons for morality, because in today's world it is not enough to just say 'don't'.
God's desire has always been to reach the Greek, and as for myself, without the evidence that confirms scripture, I would not be a believer. Some of us need to understand to believe. God has allowed all of this Greek culture to bring us back to the truth and effectiveness of the gospel. We need this reality therapy that the gospel provides because it is a doctrine of maturity that through application pulls us out of our baby mentality into the understanding that in order to change our immediate world and the world outside of ourselves, it takes community and the understanding that we are all our brothers keeper.
I hope I'm making sense here. I do agree too with you Steve that in order to stop the downward spiral of immorality as many unlearned Christians and non-Christians are practicing, we need to understand the scripture's foundational truths by not looking at the Bible as two books - the Old Testament and the New Testament - but as one in its entirety. Only then does the fog lift!
