Stargazer

Beloved, ooh I was so mad yesterday!! Today, I can laugh all about it!! This is how it all began. In an effort to score some points, some months ago, my dear husband planted some pots of flowers for me. As I recall, he had killed his old motorbike and was angling for a new one – and I was not having any of it. But, we decided to compromise after said pots were planted and parity was restored!!

He is not green fingered. In fact, neither of us are, but after months of hardly anything happening, our little back garden was awash with pinks and purples and the promise of more was to come, in the shape of a Hollyhock.

I don’t know what a Hollyhock looks like in the flesh, but the picture on the label gave the impression of a large headed flower, and it said that the plant would grow to around 2 metres. I know ours was a good example, because my Father in Law commented on how tall ours was, a month ago.

I took up photography last year, and each morning, I’d come and have a look at the pots of flowers, and then I would play with the colours on the computer. I remember thinking, ‘is this what bees see?’ when I managed to turn one of the photos almost ultra-violet. I was looking forward to the Hollyhock coming out, so I could take a photo and then ‘enhance’ it.

Now, Beloved – can you sense an air of pride about all this?

A dear friend of mine, Addie, who is Nigerian once, lent all her jewellery to a Bride, and it was stolen. She said to me ‘I was glad it was stolen – I had collected this jewellery for years. It had become an idol to me.’ A little like my Hollyhock!!

So, when my teenage son called me to say he had tidied up the garden, as my husband had asked – I had no idea that when I got home, I would find that he had taken down the wisteria completely, and with none of the pots escaping his attention, the majority of the blooms were in the recycling bin! But it was not till yesterday morning, we sat and had coffee outside, and my husband suddenly exclaimed – “oh no – he’s cut down the Hollyhock!”

I was devastated. My son said he thought it had been a weed!! Well, he’s gone on holiday and left me in charge of his cactus and aloe vera plant – mmm!! However, he trusts me not to overwater or cut them back!! Though I was tempted!

I was reminded of our dear Lord saying that Abba cuts the branches off us, that are no good. In His Word, we are also told of the promise of restoration. My Hollyhock being cut down was a mistake, and yes – I was really mad about it – but it’s one of those stories that I will remember and be able to recount at an opportunity – like when he’s 21 or if he has kids, I can tell them all about it, when they do something similar!!

Anyway, it’s good to know, isn’t it, Beloved, that we all make mistakes, but our Father allows that, and we all need to see the funny side, sometimes, otherwise, there would be no joy. Here’s what the true gardener says...I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope. Jeremiah 29v11
